It's been a while since I've blogged anything. The last couple days I've been working on engraving some bottles all the way around the circumference.
Now, I've engraved a lot of glass but I can usually engrave without the need of a rotary attachment. This project is a little different. The rotary is a nice piece of equipment and I'll need to buy one. This one is on loan from my Epilog Rep. Good thing he's a friend of mine. The learning curve isn't too steep, thank goodness.
I use dishwashing soap to make the engraving a little smoother. It helps keep the glass fracturing to a minimum. The soap is slippery enough the cause slippage on the rotary wheels so I had to play with the technique. I let the soap dry and used a silicone wrist band from the Tennessee National Guard to ride on the wheels of the rotary for "traction". I have to make sure to clean the area under the wrist band and the wrist band itself every few parts.
The next obstacle was the cap of the bottles. The cap is one of those caps that have a wire to "toggle" it on. At first I used a rubber band to secure the cap to the bottle. I think that was causing a problem and I scrapped a couple bottles. Now I'm taking the cap off and re installing it after the engraving is done. The engraver is chugging away next to me now and the problems seem to be solved.
